BBC presenter passes away at just 32

<p>BBC Scotland presenter Nick Sheridan has passed away at the age of 32, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from his devastated colleagues. </p> <p>Sheridan reportedly "collapsed while running" for the second time in recent weeks, after suffering a brain aneurysm. </p> <p>After several days in intensive care, the journalist died on Wednesday surrounded by loved ones. </p> <p>Head of News at BBC Scotland shared an emotional tribute to Sheridan, saying Nick had been a "wonderful colleague to those of us who have worked with him".</p> <p>He added, "He was a hugely talented journalist, presenter and author - and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around them. Funny, clever, kind. A lovely man.</p> <p>"Our hearts go out to his parents, who have been with him over the past ten days, to his partner, Lewis, and to all the rest of his family and friends."</p> <p>First Minister Humza Yousaf also paid tribute to Sheridan in the Scottish Parliament chamber, describing him as an "extremely talented journalist and author".</p> <p>"My thoughts are with his family, his many friends and indeed his colleagues. It will undoubtedly be a very sad time for them," he said. </p> <p>Since joining the corporation in 2018, Sheridan presented programmes including <em>Reporting Scotland</em>, <em>Drivetime</em>, the <em>Nine</em> and <em>Seven Days, </em>before dialling back his time on screen to pursue his passion of writing children's books.</p> <p><em>Image credits: BBC</em></p>

Nick Kyrgios admits tennis career "may be over"

<p>Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is seriously considering retirement as he revealed that he is "at a crossroads" in his career. </p> <p>In a column written for <em>The Sydney Morning Herald, </em>the <span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">28-year-old </span><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;"> said that despite his desire to compete at the highest level, he might never make it back to playing professional tennis. </span></p> <p>He also said that he has enjoyed being away from the courts doing the media rounds.</p> <p>"I sat down with my agent, Stuart Duguid, a couple of days ago to talk about my future," he wrote.</p> <p>"The reality is, there is a part of me that knows my time in the sport may be over. And I'm OK with that.</p> <p>"It's a conversation that needed to be had. I'm at a crossroads in my career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me."</p> <p>He also added that despite knowing he can still compete for titles, his body is letting him down, as he continues to recover from his <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/nick-kyrgios-pulls-out-of-australian-open-a-day-before-first-match" target="_blank" rel="noopener">knee injury</a> in January 2023.</p> <p>"I sit there and watch some of the players on tour and know within myself that this generation is not as strong as some of the players I have gone up against," he wrote. </p> <p>"I know I can be one of the best in the world and win major tournaments -- if my body lets me. “Privileged inbreds”: The Project host slams Charles and Camilla

Nick Kyrgios' honest thoughts on Shane Warne's open letter

<p>In 2015, late cricket legend Shane Warne posted an open letter Nick Kyrgios on social media, calling out the then hot-headed tennis player's fiery behaviour off-court. </p> <p>"Dear Nick, we all realise you're only 20 and have a lot to learn buddy, but please don't waste your talent," the letter began. </p> <p>"Everyone in the world, especially us Australians want to respect you. You need to respect the game of tennis and yourself. We all make mistakes.</p> <p>"You're testing our patience mate, show us what you're made of and how hungry you are to be the best in the world. It's time to step up and start winning, no excuses," he added in the scathing letter. </p> <p>"We all make mistakes. It's how we learn from them and the way we conduct ourselves when we lose that shows true character. You're testing our patience mate," he concluded. </p> <p>A then 20-year-old Kyrgios had just beat Spanish champion Rafael Nadal during the 2015 Wimbledon, but also attracted a lot of controversy after insulting Stan Wawrinka at a tournament in Montreal, Canada. </p> <p>This was a particularly difficult time in Kyrgios' career, as he was suspended for 28-days and got a $34,705 fine from the ATP.</p> <p>Since the incident, Kyrgios has managed to get his professional life back on track, and in a recent interview with Piers Morgan on his show <em>Uncensored</em>, the tennis star shared that he never read the letter. </p> <p>"I saw it and didn't read it. I'm never going to be the first one to go out on social media and put someone down," he told the host. </p> <p>He added that he believed that Warne would be proud of how far he's come. </p> <p>"I look back at that letter and at how far I've come and I'd say he would be proud for sure. “I run on bananas and coke cola": Kyrgios wades into doping debate

<p>Nick Kyrgios has raised eyebrows over his out-of-pocket comments on the recent doping scandal surrounding the world of tennis. </p> <p>The Aussie champion spoke over current testing protocols in the wake of Romanian tennis player Simon Halep being slapped with a four-year ban from the game for doping offences.</p> <p>Naturally, many tennis champions from around the world have put in their two cents on the recent ban, as Greek player Maria Sakkari called out the measures for being "scary". </p> <p>She told a tennis news site, “One thing I can tell you for sure is the way they’re handling every situation with any player, any athlete, it’s just scary.”</p> <p>“We’re gonna get to a point where we’re not even gonna be taking electrolytes. Thankfully, I haven’t been in that position. I never want to be. I’ve been very careful with everything that has to do with supplements. But I don’t know what the process is, how things are done behind closed doors."</p> <p>Nick Kyrgios was quick to jump in to the debate, responding to Sakkari's comments on Twitter saying, “Ehhhh not really lol.”</p> <p>“I run on bananas and coke cola in 5 set battles. And my record in them speaks for itself."</p> <p>“Maybe players should just stop taking shady sh*t. Look yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and say yep I did it right. Not hard.”</p> <p>Fans soon came after Kyrgios, but he doubled down.</p> <p>Kyrgios responded to one Twitter user’s sledge by posting, “I’d imagine if I was taking similar things to be banned for 4 years I’d have about 5 slams. Potato”.</p> <p>Kyrgios has had a difficult season as he has been forced to take time off to recover from injuries to his wrist and knees. </p> <p>He has urged his fans to be patient as he works on his recovery, as he is determined to get back on the court. </p> <p>"To my millions of fans out there, I guess we just have to be patient,” Kyrgios wrote in an Instagram story, accompanied by a picture of him in the gym.</p> <p>“Trust me, I still have some fire left in the tank, my body just needs time to recover and get back.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Diving deeper into generosity: Cave diver's charitable gift shines a light on giving back

<p>Josh lives in Adelaide and is an avid cave diver, loves writing funny books about science, and spends a lot of time reading and studying online. They might still disagree with different elements of my Will when it's executed, but the important thing is that I don't cause additional grief by leaving ambiguous directions.”</p> <p>Josh was previously unaware that he could leave gifts to charity in his Will. “I certainly didn't think it was an option,” he says. “Until Safewill asked if I wanted to allocate a portion of my estate to charity, I'd never really given it much thought and figured I'd never have enough to make it worth mentioning. Stevie Nicks faces wild backlash over Hawaii fires post

<p>Stevie Nicks, the celebrated icon from Fleetwood Mac, has drawn a mixed response among her admirers due to her extensive reflection on the Maui fires, with even her most devoted supporters not hesitating to express their concerns.</p> <p>The legendary artist took to social media to convey her thoughts regarding the tragic Maui fires, a subject close to her heart. However, her detailed account of how the catastrophe impacted her, particularly in relation to her niece's disrupted holiday plans, has drawn a divisive reaction.</p> <p>In a post entitled "“Lahaina is not gone ~ It is just away,” Nicks opened up about her personal connection to the coastal town that fell victim to the destructive fires, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals.</p> <p>“As I am sure you have heard – the island, Maui, where I own a house I have been staying at since the 80s – and the small village, city, most magical place on earth, Lahaina, burned to the ground over the last few days,” she wrote.</p> <p>She further explained the distressing situation involving her young niece, her spouse, and their child, who had just embarked on a much-needed vacation before the niece's return to her studies in psychology. True colours are shining and it’s such a disappointment.”</p> <p>While detractors were vocal, others stood up for Nicks, contending that her personal connection to the island warranted her sharing her story just as much as anyone else – with one post in particular offering a particularly insightful explanation:</p> <p>"People commenting with criticism: I sincerely understand but what you don’t realize is that this is a woman who doesn’t go on the internet or understand how any of that works. She hand writes these notes to express her heart and has an assistant post them. She has always given back without advertising it. If she knew better, I could understand the frustration but she’s just not a part of social media discourse whatsoever. ‘Good soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living’: a (condensed) history of soup, from cave to can

But its long history runs from the Stone Age and antiquity through to modernity, encompassing the birth of the restaurant, advances in chemistry, and a famous pop art icon.</p> <p>The basic nature of soup has a fundamental appeal that feels primordial – because it is.</p> <p><a href="https://www.academia.edu/12384834/2015_Speth_When_Did_Humans_Learn_to_Boil_">Archaeologists</a> speculate the first soup might have been made by Neanderthals, boiling animal bones to extract fat essential for their diet and drinking the broth. Without the fats, their high intake of lean animal meats could have led to protein poisoning, so stone age soup was an important complement to primeval nutrition.</p> <p>The fundamental benefit of these bone broths is confirmed by archaeological discoveries around the world, ranging from a gelatin broth in <a href="https://www.archaeology.org/issues/317-1811/trenches/7056-trenches-egypt-giza-livestock-bones">Egypt’s Giza plateau</a>, to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-pacific-11981666">Shaanxi Province</a> in China.</p> <p>The widespread distribution of archaeological finds is a reminder soup not only has a long history, but is also a global food.</p> <p>Today, our idea of soup is more refined, but the classic combination of stock and bread is embedded in the Latin root of the verb <em>suppāre</em>, meaning “to soak”.</p> <p>As a noun, <em>suppa</em> became <em>soupe</em> in Old French, meaning bread soaked in broth, and <em><a href="https://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/middle-english-dictionary/dictionary/MED41830/track?counter=1&search_id=24326280">sowpes</a></em> in Middle English. This pairing was also an economical way of reclaiming stale bread and thickening a thin broth. Modern science made it convenient and less expensive for home cooks.</p> <p>In 1897, a chemist at the Campbell soup company, John Dorrance, developed a <a href="https://www.campbellsoupcompany.com/about-us/our-story/campbell-history/">condensed canned soup</a> that dramatically reduced the water content. Winning the prize was an achievement considering the competition at the world fair. The other technological advances exhibited at the turn of the century included the diesel engine, “talking” films, dry cell batteries and the Paris Metro.</p> <p>The bronze medallion from 1900 still appears on the iconic red and white label, made famous by pop artist Andy Warhol’s <a href="https://www.moma.org/learn/moma_learning/andy-warhol-campbells-soup-cans-1962/">32 Campbell Soup Cans</a> (1962).</p> <p>In his work, Warhol appropriated images from consumer culture and the media ordinary people would instantly recognise, from Coca-Cola bottles to Marilyn Monroe. In his famous soup painting, 32 canvases – one for each flavour of soup – are lined up like cans on a supermarket shelf.</p> <p>Some <a href="https://warhol.netx.net/portals/warhol-exhibitions/#asset/108496">interpretations</a> consider this a commentary on the link between art and consumerism, emphasising the ordinary quality of the everyday object. The artist may also have been influenced by his personal eating habits – he claimed he had <a href="https://whitney.org/collection/works/5632">soup for lunch</a> every day for 20 years.</p> <h2>‘One of the prime ingredients of good living’</h2> <p>A steady diet of soup is not guaranteed to inspire famous art, but its appeal is universal. Soup can be humble or fancy, cutting across cultures and classes.</p> <p>Deceptively simple, the warmth and comfort of soup provide a temporary refuge from the winter chill, comforting the diner from the inside.</p> <p>The French chef Auguste Escoffier, famous for enshrining the five basic “<a href="https://www.escoffieronline.com/our-guide-to-escoffiers-5-mother-sauces/">mother sauces</a>” in French cuisine, raised soups to perfection in the early 20th century, developing refined preparations that remain classics today.</p> <p>Escoffier, <a href="https://books.google.com.au/books/about/Escoffier.html?id=JFIDd639wlQC&redir_esc=y">known as</a> “the king of chefs and the chef of kings”, had very <a href="https://www.google.com.au/books/edition/A_Guide_to_Modern_Cookery/KCbkcXHj7qoC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=escoffier+guide+culinaire&printsec=frontcover">high standards</a> for soup, claiming “of all the items on the menu, soup is that which exacts the most delicate perfection”.</p> <p>An Austrian apprentice of Escoffier, Louis P. De Gouy, was chef at the Waldorf Astoria for 30 years and wrote 13 cookbooks.</p> <p>He summed up the appeal of soup in a <a href="https://www.google.com.au/books/edition/The_Soup_Book/1tNmDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&printsec=frontcover">volume</a> dedicated to the dish with over 700 recipes:</p> <blockquote> <p>Good soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living. Nick Kyrgios opens up about alleged Tesla theft

<p>Nick Kyrgios has revealed how he has been impacted by the suspected theft of his Tesla after a man allegedly forced his mother to hand over the keys at gunpoint.</p> <p>The Aussie tennis star worked with police to track the bright green car after it was allegedly stolen on May 1.</p> <p>ACT Police said a 32-year-old Canberra man <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/nick-kyrgios-mother-held-at-gunpoint-during-alleged-car-theft" target="_blank" rel="noopener">threatened Kyrgios’ mother</a> Noralia with a gun and demanded she hand over the keys to her son’s $191,000 Tesla.</p> <p>Mr Kygrios is said to have tracked his car via the Tesla app where he was able to impose a speed limit, allowing police to locate and follow the vehicle.</p> <p>The tennis great broke his silence on Instagram about the ordeal.</p> <p>“Last couple days has been rough...haven’t slept much and battling a little,” he said.</p> <p>“Appreciative of all the support.”</p> <p>ACT police raided a property in Canberra’s south on May 2 as a part of their investigation.</p> <p>They found a shotgun that was thought to be the firearm used in the robbery as well as two others, a pistol and a .177 air rifle.</p> <p>Police also seized a rented BMW that was overdue for return, commercial-grade fireworks and “substances suspected of being illicit drugs”.</p> <p>Court documents viewed by NCA <em>NewsWire </em>revealed more details about the incident.</p> <p>Ms Kyrgios told police interviewers she was worried that the man would return and “blow a hole in the door”.</p> <p>The man faced the ACT Magistrates Court on May 2 and was charged with aggravated robbery, failing to stop a motor vehicle for police, driving while suspended, driving a motor vehicle without consent and obstructing/resisting public officials.</p> <p><em>Image credit: Instagram</em></p>

Nick Kyrgios' mother held at gunpoint during alleged car theft

<p dir="ltr">Nick Kyrgios' mother, Norlaila Kyrgios, has allegedly been held at gunpoint by a man who then stole the tennis star’s bright green Tesla in Canberra.</p> <p dir="ltr">The tennis star, his manager, Daniel Horsfall, and Ms Kyrgios were all at home when she heard a knock at the door.</p> <p dir="ltr">In a statement to the ACT Police, Ms Kyrgios said that she unlocked and partially opened the front door before she saw a long-barrel gun pointed at her.</p> <p dir="ltr">A man wearing all-black clothing and a face mask, demanded she hand over the keys to her son’s luxurious car and asked her to show him how to drive it, but she didn’t know how to since it wasn’t her vehicle.</p> <p dir="ltr">The man then got into the car, and Ms Kyrgios used this as an opportunity to “run back inside and scream for help”, before Kyrgios called triple zero.</p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking to police after the incident, Ms Kyrgios was "visibly shaken and frightened" and told them that "she was so fearful that he was going to return to the house and 'blow a hole in the door'".</p> <p dir="ltr">Kyrgios was allegedly able to track his car and impose a speed limit remotely via an app, which allowed police to follow it.</p> <p dir="ltr">After about 15 minutes police had managed to track the vehicle down to a street in the suburb of Watson.</p> <p dir="ltr">They then "approached the Tesla, drew their issued firearm and aimed it towards the defendant” who then sped away, and led them to engage in a “short pursuit”, police revealed.</p> <p dir="ltr">The pursuit eventually ended when police sealed off a street in Ainslie.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police said that the alleged car thief initially refused to get out but was arrested shortly after.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 32-year-old faced the ACT Magistrates Court where he was charged with aggravated robbery, driving a stolen motor vehicle, driving while suspended, and failing to stop for police.</p> <p dir="ltr">He was denied bail.</p> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

<p>Nick Kyrgios’ girlfriend Costeen Hatzi has given her first TV interview, appearing on<span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;"> Channel 7’s </span><em style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">The Morning Show</em><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">, where she shared how she first the Aussie tennis star, and discussed a potential future engagement.</span></p> <p>Hatzi, 22, revealed that the pair's first encounter was less than conventional, linking back to a mirror she had advertised for sale online.</p> <p>“I used to have an online home decor business and I would sell mirrors and candles and vases,” she told <em>The Morning Show</em>.</p> <p>“I took a photo - like a mirror selfie - and I posted it to my business Instagram.”</p> <p>She explained that the photo had appeared on Kyrgios’ explore page on Instagram, which led him to track her down and meet her.</p> <p>“So he clicked on it and then messaged the business and was like, ‘Hey, can I buy this mirror?’”</p> <p>Hatzi said despite Kyrgios living in Melbourne, he was quick to offer to collect the mirror from Sydney in person.</p> <p>“He came to Sydney, he invited me out that night, so I went with a few friends,” she said.</p> <p>The business owner admitted she chose to bring friends along with her in case it went “badly”.</p> <p>“But, everything went well, it was so friendly, it was so nice - I didn’t really expect him to be so friendly and nice.”</p> <p>She went on to say that although she didn’t follow tennis at the time, she was aware of his “on-court behaviour and stuff” so she “was a bit skeptical”.</p> <p>“But we met up and then we spent every day with each other after that,” she said.</p> <p>Hatzi said her family was “a bit confused” when she shared she was going out for drinks with the tennis star.</p> <p>“I told my mum that he was picking up the mirror and she was like, ‘Oh does he just want the mirror or does he want to take you out?’” she said.</p> <p>It has been 18 months since the couple first met and they now live together and travel the world for Kyrgios’ many tennis commitments.</p> <p>“I can work while I’m travelling,” Hatzi said, explaining that focusing on her work and travelling combines well.</p> <p>“So I can film all my Instagram content on the road.</p> <p>“That kind of works well. We travelled together on tour last year and we’re going again this year.”</p> <p>Hatzi has her own exciting new venture as she is now a new face of Bondi Sands, which Kyrgios teased on social media could lead to his “early retirement”.</p> <p>“He’s really supportive, I’m really lucky to have him,” she said.</p> <p>Hatzi also touched on her boyfriend’s previous comments that she is “the one”.</p> <p>In February 2022, Kyrgios was asked by a fan if he knew Hatzi was the one when he first saw her, which he responded with “yes”.</p> <p>She smiled at the comment but revealed that the pair were not planning their engagement “yet”.</p> <p>“I mean, if it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” she said.</p> <p>“I’m just going with the flow and we’re happy and healthy and, yeah, that’s all that matters.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Instagram</em></p>

“I didn’t want to come out!”: Spanish mountaineer emerges after 500 days underground

<p>When Spanish mountaineer Beatriz Flamini descended into her cave - and home for the next 500 days - the world was an entirely different place. </p> <p>COVID-19 restrictions were still enforced, Queen Elizabeth II was still alive and on the throne, war hadn’t been declared in Ukraine, and Flamini herself was only 48. </p> <p>She entered the cave on November 20 2021, and while she was forced to surface for eight days while repairs were made to a router - one used for transmitting audio and video - she spent that brief period isolated in a tent. </p> <p>And then, a year and a half later, a 50-year-old Flamini emerged from 230 feet underground outside of Granada, Spain. And while most would be eager for some sunshine and some company after such a stint, Flamini had an entirely different take, informing everyone that she had actually been sound asleep when her team came to collect her. </p> <p>“I thought something had happened,” she said. “I said, ‘already? Surely not.’ I hadn’t finished my book.”</p> <p>And when it came to whether or not she’d struggled while down there, Flamini was quite to declare “never. In fact, I didn’t want to come out!”</p> <p>To keep herself occupied during the marathon stay, Flamini tried her hand at a whole host of popular pastimes, from knitting to exercising, painting, knitting, and reading. The effort paid off, the days flying by as the determined mountaineer successfully lost track of time.</p> <p>“On day 65, I stopped counting and lost perception of time,” she explained. “I didn’t talk to myself out loud, but I had internal conversations and got on very well with myself.</p> <p>“You have to remain conscious of your feelings. If you’re afraid, that’s something natural, but never let panic in, or you get paralysed.”</p> <p>Flamini was given a panic button in case of emergency, but she never felt the need to use it. And while her support team were on hand to give her clean clothing, provide essential food, and remove any waste that had accumulated, they were not to talk to her.</p> <p>“If it’s no communication it’s no communication, regardless of the circumstances,” Flamini said of that particular decision. “The people who know me knew and respected that.”</p> <p>As for what comes next, Flamini will now be studied by a team of experts - psychologists, researchers, and the like - to determine what impact the isolation of her extended time below might have had on her. </p> <p><em>Images: Getty, Sky News</em></p>

<p>Nick Kyrgios has shared his honest and unfiltered thoughts about celebrities heading into the jungle. </p> <p>The tennis champion was engaging with his fans during a Q&A on Instagram on Wednesday night, when one of his followers asked if he would ever consider appearing on the show <em>I'm A Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!</em></p> <p>Kyrgios shared his brutal response on the public platform, expressing his distaste for the Channel Ten reality show. </p> <p>“No,” he responded. “People that go on that show tend to not be celebrities anyway, excuse to get money..."</p> <p>“They take themselves a bit too seriously because they are known in Australia.”</p> <p>While it's clear Nick won't compete on <em>I’m A Celeb</em> anytime soon, a number of other high-profile sports stars have appeared on the show across its nine seasons.</p> <p>Fellow tennis star Bernard Tomic was a part of season four in 2018 and became the first contestant in the show’s history to withdraw, calling it quits after just three days in the jungle.</p> <p>Several football players have also entered the jungle, including Barry Hall, Brendan Fevola, Dane Swan and Beau Ryan, as well as cricketers Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, Merv Hughes and Shane Warne, boxers Anthony Mundine and Danny Green, and Olympic swimmers Leisel Jones, Lisa Curry and Emily Seebohm.</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

“That’s why we call him Superman”: Sea World crash survivor speaks

<div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <p>The little boy who nearly lost his life in the tragic Sea World helicopter crash has revealed an update on his journey to recovery two months after the incident occurred.</p> <p>Nicky Tadros shared the news after months in hospital, with doctors initially unsure if the 10-year-old would make it out alive.</p> <p>“My kidneys have woken up and I’m no more on a fluid restriction,” he said on Nine’s A Current Affair.</p> <p>“And my liver levels have gotten better and all my blood test results have come back really good.”</p> <p>Nicky was on one of the helicopters that collided mid-air at Sea World on the Gold Coast.</p> <p>His mother, Vanessa Tadros, was killed alongside British tourists Ron and Diane Hughes and Sea World Helicopters chief pilot Ash Jenkinson. The other helicopter managed to land on a sandbank.</p> <p>Nicky’s father, Simon Tadros, said he was incredibly proud of his “strong willed” son’s recovery effort.</p> <p>“The bravery he’s showing and he’s just pushing through every kind of hardship,” Mr Tadros said.</p> <p>“That’s why we call him Superman, because everything you put in front of him, he just pushes it out on the way.”</p> <p>Despite the effort to save Nicky’s life, doctors were unable to save his right leg, with the 10-year-old having to undergo a five-and-a-half-hour operation to amputate.</p> <p>“I was nervous at the beginning because I thought they get a chainsaw and chop it off from Bunnings Warehouse,” he said.</p> <p>Although the boy had endured countless surgeries with a long road to recovery ahead, he was grateful for the support he received.</p> <p>“I thank [Australia] for everything because I know that they’re always praying for me and caring for me and that’s the same with dad,” he said.</p> <p>“[Dad]’s always caring for me, since day one he’s never left my side no matter what.</p> <p>“When I’m sad when I’m happy when I’m angry, he’s there for me.”</p> <p>Mr Tadros has celebrated each milestone as his son works toward leaving hospital and returning to his normal life.</p> <p>Nicky also shared what he was most looking forward to once he leaves hospital.</p> <p><em>Image credit: A Current Affair</em></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div>

Thai cave rescue survivor dies aged just 17

<p>Duangphet Promthep, one of 12 boys who was rescued along with their soccer coach from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system in northern Thailand, has died. </p> <p>Duangphet was found unconscious in his dormitory on Sunday, and sadly passed away two days later. While the exact cause of death is unknown at this time, reports from the United Kingdom suggest he had suffered a head injury. </p> <p>Duangphet had only been enrolled in Leicester’s Brooke House College Football Academy since late 2022. </p> <p>Thai non-profit organisation Zico Foundation, which had assisted him in getting a scholarship to study in England, shared its condolences on Facebook. </p> <p>“Zico Foundation would like to express its condolences and condolence for the passing away of Little Dom Duangphet Phromthep,” they wrote of Duangphet, who also went by the name ‘Dom’, “a student of Zico Foundation.”</p> <p>When Duangphet was only 13 years old, he was trapped with his soccer team - the Wild Boars soccer team of which he was captain - and their squad’s assistant coach for over two weeks in a cave system known as the ‘Great Cave of the Sleeping Lady'. </p> <p>The twelve boys were between the ages 11 and 16, and 4 kilometres into their fateful adventure, when rising floodwaters prevented their escape from Thailand’s fourth-largest cave system. </p> <p>It was an international effort to save the boys and their coach, with a search and rescue mission that spanned over two weeks, with divers from Thailand and from overseas stepping in to help. </p> <p>Some of the boys who were with him in those terrifying times shared their condolences on social media as news of his passing broke around the world. </p> <p>“Brother, you told me that we would be achieving our football dream,” wrote Titan Chanin Viboonrungruan. “If the next world is real, I want us to play football together again, my brother Dom.”</p> <p>“You told me to wait and see you play for the national team, I always believed that you would do it," Prachak Sutham said. "When we met the last time before you left for England, I even jokingly told you that when you come back, I would have to ask for your autograph.</p> <p>"Sleep well, my dear friend. We will always have 13 of us together."</p> <p>In a statement, Duangphet’s school principal Ian Smith said, “this event has left our college community deeply saddened and shaken.</p> <p>“We unite in grief with all of Dom's family, friends, former teammates and those involved in all parts of his life, as well as everyone affected in any way by this loss in Thailand and throughout the college's global family."</p> <p>Dom’s mother joined an online news conference and shared her hope that a Buddhist monk in England would be able to conduct rites for Duangphet.</p> <p>In that same conference, former Thai national soccer team coach and the Zico Foundation’s chairman Kiatisuk Senamuang, described his shock at the news of Duangphet’s passing. </p> <p>“My thoughts are with his family and friends,' he said, fighting tears. 'I think back to his dream of becoming a professional footballer, representing his country and his voice keeps speaking in my head.”</p> <p>He went on to explain that as far as he knew, Duangphet had been healthy, as a full health check had been performed in order for Duangphet to obtain his student visa. Nick Kyrgios’ assault charge dismissed after guilty plea

<p>World no. 20 tennis player Nick Kyrgios faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday and dodged a conviction despite a guilty plea. </p> <p>Nick issued a guilty plea to common assault during an argument with his ex-girlfriend, Chiara Passari, over two years ago in 2021. </p> <p>Initially, he and his lawyers argued that the charge should be dropped due to his mental health. This was withdrawn when it was revealed to the court that he was not suffering from a “significant depressive illness” at the time. </p> <p>As Nick’s lawyer - Michael Kukulies-Smith - put it, there was "a relationship between the mental health and the offending - even though he no longer suffers it to the same extent today."</p> <p>It was then that Nick pleaded guilty to the charge of common assault. </p> <p>Although Magistrate Beth Campbell rejected the dismissal on mental health grounds, she ultimately dismissed the case, believing that a conviction was not warranted. </p> <p>The court was informed that Magistrate Campbell would be dealing with Nick’s case in the same manner that she would approach that of any other individual with the same charges, and that Nick’s status as a notable Australian figure would not come into play.</p> <p>“I am dealing with you in the same way I would deal with any young man in this court,” she said, “you are a young man who happens to hit a tennis ball particularly well."</p> <p>Although Magistrate Campbell agreed that Chiara Passari was clearly distressed over the 2021 assault, she went on to say that it appeared to be an isolated incident, and an “impulsive and unfortunate response” on Nick’s part. She noted that he was a “young man trying to extricate himself from a heightened emotional situation.”</p> <p>Michael Kukulies-Smith requested that a conviction not be recorded as Nick had been quick to display remorse for what he had done. Magistrate Beth Campbell went on to dismiss the charge later in the hearing, allowing that no conviction would be recorded.</p> <p>Nick issued a brief statement to reporters on his way out of the court, thanking the court and confessing that he was “sincerely sorry”.</p> <p>“I was not in a good place when this took place,” he said, “and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret. </p> <p>“Mental health is tough. He aims to recover in time to be back on the court for the Indian Wells Masters in March.</p> <p>“I’m devastated, obviously. It’s my home tournament, I’ve had some great memories here,” he said, “Obviously, last year winning the title in doubles and playing the best tennis of my life probably.</p> <p>“Then going into this event as one of the favourites, it’s brutal. To Nick’s credit he did try everything - to the point even last week he was having a procedure called fenestration and drainage where they use a syringe to try and drain the cyst.”</p> <p>Maher went on to stress that withdrawing was the right decision for Kyrgios and his future in tennis, and gave fans of the tennis star hope that they’d soon see him take the courts again. </p> <p>“I think we made the sensible decision to withdraw him because at this stage he wants to feel mentally comfortable that he can go seven matches, he can go the distance,” Maher stated, “we wanted to prevent him from causing further injury or making that injury worse …</p> <p>“It won’t interrupt his year tremendously despite the fact that it’s a great disappointment to withdraw from the Australian Open home Slam.
